A metal label on the top left side of this clock translates as “fabricated by Mr. and Mrs. N. Hattingh, Vanderbijlpark”. Vanderbijlpark is a city of 75,000 in South Africa, at latitude 27 degrees south (compare to Tampa Florida which is 27 degrees north). The clock was shipped from South Africa to Maine by a family with ties to both areas. The case is presumably one of a kind, built in a home shop. Based on wood density, fragrance and endgrain analysis, the main case is rosewood. I don’t even have a guess for the raised panel in the lower door. I’ve replaced the old Hermle movement with a brand new Hermle movement, so this clock should be mechanically sound for many years to come. I’m including the old movement in this deal, in case you want to take up clock repair! This movement plays the Westminster chimes (progressing through the four bars of music over the four quarter hours), and strikes the hours. The clock may not run a full week on a winding, as the weights do not drop the entire height of the case. Here’s some trivia for you – the Westminster chime tune actually has words! In theory, people within earshot of the chimes would recite these words every fifteen minutes as they heard the chimes play: All through this hour, Lord be my guide, That by Thy power, No foot shall slide.
